Roy 'Chubby' Brown is a phenomenon!

He has been filling theatres and concert halls for more than 30 years without ever appearing on mainstream TV.

His video and DVD sales run into millions and are found in countless Christmas stockings. His Autobiography 'Common as Muck' recently reached number 7 in the Sunday Times 'Bestsellers list'. In the 90's his record with pop group 'Smokie' 'Who the F**k is Alice' reached number 1 in the charts in many countries around the world. Who would have thought that this could be possible in an age when TV rules our lives. Celebrities are famous for being famous and the stars are chefs, gardeners, and property agents. From his humble beginning born in 1945, three months before the end of the war, Royston Vasey was born into one of the poorest and roughest industrial suburbs in the country, Grangetown, Middlesbrough.

When he was nine years old his mother ran off, taking his sister with her and leaving him with his much loved but violent father. When food was scarce he started thieving, and it wasn't long before he was in trouble with the police. By the age of nineteen he had spent many long months in prison, been incarcerated in Britain's toughest Borstal for two years, been married, divorced, had two kids and been stabbed in the Merchant navy. On his release from prison Roy joined a band and toured the working men's clubs determined not to return to a life of deprivation.

When the band split he turned to stand-up and Royston Vasey became Roy 'Chubby' Brown, with a unique brand of humour that came from the docks and the pits. Night after night he worked the northern club circuit dodging pint glasses and honing his act. It was when he turned blue, that he finally struck gold. However, although he experienced incredible fame, in success things did not run smoothly: Aged 60, and at the top of his game, Roy faced a new crisis: throat cancer. He was told that if he survived he might never be able to talk again. For a man used to making his living by talking and singing, the news shattered him to the core. But time, perseverance and gritty determination saw him take to the stage once again: The rudest, crudest, most controversial entertainer in Britain was back.

He has been called the most offensive/shocking comedian on the planet, but millions of fans worldwide have enjoyed his live shows and DVD's. Although you may not like some of his material, it is impossible not to like the man, he is warm and friendly, who is passionate about comedy and the art of making people laugh. He will find the funny side in everything and often says that it is better 'to laugh than to fight'. He is one of Britain's great natural 'funny men' alongside, Mick Millar, Tommy Cooper, Freddie Starr, Ken Dodd, Michael Barrymore and Les Dawson. All have been blessed with great talent, touched with controversy. Now at 62, life is a balancing act for 'Chubby', travelling up to 1000 miles a week performing, writing and recording new material, and enjoying life with Helen and his young family. Like his hero Ken Dodd, he will probably carry on until he falls over.

Love him or hate him, Roy 'Chubby' Brown has been making us laugh for many years and long may he continue.
